Chapter 1: Organizers

 

Bright Speakers Municipal Contest 2017 is organized by the International Computer High School of Bucharest in  partnership with the City School Inspectorate.

The Bright Speakers Contest 2017 comprises 4 sections:

 

1. English: V – VIII grades;

2. English: IX – XII grades;

3. Romanian: V – VIII grades;

4. Romanian: IX – XII grades.

 

The Bright Speakers Contest 2017 consists of a 3-minute public speech on "Leadership - The capacity of translating vision into reality ", starting from the following quotations:

 

"The most powerful leadership tool you have is your own personal example." (John Wooden)

 

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you have a leader." (John Quincy Adams)

 

Rules:

-  We do not accept copied speeches or speeches made by someone other than the student who delivers the speech.It is very important that ideas found in the speeches are students' own ideas, because this is the only way in which the students will have an authentic learning experience;

-  Students may participate in only one section (Romanian or English), given that the fact that the samples will be carried out simultaneously

-  It is also very important that both the students and teachers who prepare the students to use the mark scheme included in this regulation in the preparation for the competition because speeches are marked based on the ideas, nonverbal language, originality , spontaneity and stage movement;

-   Students have the opportunity to bring their props to help them pass their ideas better, to make their message understood and inspire their audience;

-  Students will not exceed the allotted three minutes for each;

-  At the end of each speech, limited time available, how many students will extract a question about the theme of the competition and provide an answer spontaneously, fits in more than 1 minute;

-  Students who read their speeches can not score any points and that is why we encourage students to document themselves thoroughly on the topic of the contest, build their own speeches to reflect their vision of the given topic, to own the speech and to repeat it until they are satisfied with the evolution and the outcome of their preparation;

-  Students and teachers can use within the preparation the speeches about found on the platform www.ted.com:

The stages of the Bright Speakers Competition

 I. The School Stage:

The school stage will be organized on the 4th of March 2017 by each participating school.

The juries will be made up of at least 3 people who will fill in the score sheets according to the criteria of the contest, and the list with the finalists for the City Stage will be sent on Monday, the 6th of March at This email address is being protected from spambots. - Places I, II, III section - gymnasium, English;

- Places I, II, III section - gymnasium, Romanian;

- Places I, II, III, section - high school English;

- Places I, II, III section – high school, Romanian.

 

Saturday, the 4th of March,  9:00 to 2:00 p.m.:

 

 Section for speeches in English: Classes V - VIII and IX - XII.

 Section for speeches in Romanian: Classes V - VIII and IX - XII.

 

All the public and private schools participating in the Bright Speakers Municipal Contest will select two coordinators: an teacher of English and a teacher of the Romanian language.

You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by  17th February 2017and will receive from us: our competition poster, the scoring records, the diplomas for the school stage and all the necessary information to prepare the students.

1. The lists of finalists for the city stage of the competition:

 

- Three finalists in the gymnasium section, English;

- Three finalists in the gymnasium section, Romanian;

- Three finalists in the high school section, English;

- Three finalists in the high school section, Romanian.

 

2. A brief description of the city stage and the pictures of the event.

 

II. The City Stage:

 

The city stage will be organized on the 1st of April 2017 by ISMB and ICHB at Lumina University and will bring together all the finalists from the school stage of the competition.

 

 Saturday,1st of April, 9:00 to 2:00 p.m.:

 

 Section for speeches in English: Classes V - VIII and IX - XII;

 Section for speeches in Romanian: Classes V - VIII and IX - XII.

 

The grand prize of the competition is provided by our partner and sponsor Mirunette International Education and consists of an English camp in UK (2 weeks worth 2000 euros).

The winners of the city stage of the competition will receive other prizes from our sponsors: books from Carturesti, courses and vouchers from the Public Speaking schools involved and other surprise prizes.

The speeches of the winners will appear on the sites of the institutions involved and they will give interviews about what motivated and inspired them to design their speeches.

The team of managers of the schools involved are committed to take into account the innovative ideas that students will promote in their speeches and implement the ideas that can enhance the quality of the educational activity.

 

 

 

2: The objectives and the timing of the Bright Speakers Municipal Competition

     

 The Bright Speakers Municipal Competition has the following objectives:

 

1. Promoting creativity;

2. Promoting students' ideas;

3. Improving students' ability to speak in public;

4. Preparing students to speak correctly, fluently and convincingly in Romanian and English;

5. Improving the quality of the educational system.

 

The calendar of the competition:

Enrollment at the school stage by the 17th of February 2017:

All public and private schools participating in the Bright Speakers Municipal Competition will select two coordinators: a teacher of English and a teacher of Romanian.

The School Stage

The City Stage

 

Saturday, 1st April 2017, 9:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the Lumina University amphitheatre.

3.Evaluation Criteria

 

1. Presentation and language: 35 points

 

The speaker must use his intonation, body language and words in order to manage to attract and maintain the interest of the public. Vocabulary must be clear and assertive.

 

2. Subject and argumentation: 35 points

The speaker must present some interesting, relevant and meaningful points of view. The speech should be presented in a clear and structured manner. The speaker may present multiple viewpoints, but it is important to vocalize his/her own point of view as well.

 

3. Structure: 15 points

The speaker must be able to guide his/her audience, starting with an introduction that highlights the main objectives and importance of the subject and closing his/her speech with a clear conclusion.

 

 4. The question from the jury: 15 points

The speaker must answer the question briefly (no more than 1 minute), but providing relevant arguments.
